Canada: The frozen Maple leaf

Having a surface are of more than 10 million square kms, Canada is one of the largest nations in the world, and has quite an eyeful of phenomenons that are famous the world over – polychromatic skies, huge mountains and mammoth glaciers. Even the creatures roaming about in the wild terrain, proclaiming their territory, are quite a sight – the grizzly bear, polar bear and moose, along with the humpback whale in the sea. The cities of Toronto and Montreal are packed to the brim with more festivals that one can imagine, and even more people! However, there’s room for everyone, and just in case one is more of an art and history buff, there’s St. John’s, Newfoundland, which is North America’s oldest city. The Banff & Jasper National Parks give many opportunities to hike snowboard and ski, while one can also choose to go for a slow ride amidst the prairies of Saskatchewan. However, a word of caution here would be that since Canada is among the world’s coldest countries, it’s best to avoid going in winters unless one really wants to feel the chill in all its fervour!

Toronto: Situated across Lake Ontario, the capital city of Toronto is an amalgamation of the typical cultural pot-boiler that America is, and carving out its own independent niche. The residents seem to not mind the balancing act too much, so to speak. Both the cultures are embraced with equal excitement and elation. In the early days, Toronto was nothing more than an icebox for Canada, and in some cases, also for the rest of the world. There have been settlements of Europeans, Latin Americans, Asians and Caribbeans over the years, and every second Canadian was born in a different part of the world. Moving on, the arts and culture scene is pretty much active, much to the delight of Canadian citizens who love to live in a literary, artistic and musical setting. With the dawn of September, the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) gets ready to roll out the red carpet, and street festivals, exhibitions, dance performances and rock concerts fill the agenda for many days at a stretch. The food scene is also worth checking out, as a flurry of multi-cuisine restaurants fill the Canadian streets and entice one to try out the exotic Korean, Malaysian, Italian and Indian tastes, to name a few!

Queen Charlotte Islands: The first thing one will notice while visiting Queen Charlotte Islands is the extent of flora and fauna that prevails here. Owing to this, the term ‘Canada’s Galapagos’ has been given to the destination. However, as time passes by, it becomes increasingly evident that the true spirit of the islands is the Haida culture that prevails despite all the modernisation, making the place a must visit destination for those who love to indulge in arts and history, and others, just for the experience!
