Key Ski Terms to know
Skiing games: In general, if you don’t know the difference between a ski bib from a jacket, this list is for you. There are a few basic ski terms for beginning snow skiers and snowboarders This list may be particularly helpful for youth groups, families or individuals. In short, this list should be required reading for anyone who will be going on a Skiing trip.
The Travel for a cool winter sport hotspots is always popular. The Snow sports are exhilarating and can be fun for the entire family. You should make plans for winter activities just as you would for a vacation during the hot summer months. Like summer activities winter sports have a language all their own. Although the list is not exhaustive, this group of ski terms for beginning snow skiers and snowboarders.
Ski Bibs - A type of overalls that are especially designed for skiers. These are designed for tough snow conditions. Usually they are lightweight, warm and will be water resistant. Purchase them in sporting goods shops or outfitters.
Bindings – These straps are used to securely fasten your boot to your skis.
Outfitters - This is one of the ski terms for beginning snow skiers and snowboarders that sometimes causes confusion. An outfitter sells or rents equipment that you need for a specific sport. When it comes to skiing, skis and poles are usually rented from outfitters that are near the ski resort. They can also sell you anything that you might need or want.
Ski Patrol - They are the highly trained, highly skilled, rescuers of the ski world. They respond to emergencies on the slopes. Ski patrols make sure that trails are ready for skiers. They may also police advanced trails by directing novices to areas that are more suited for their skills.
Code of Conduct - Rules that all skiers should adhere to on and off the slopes. Abiding by the conduct code makes skiing fun and safe for everyone. Rules are generally the same but may vary slightly at some resorts.
Black diamond slopes - These refer to or mark the most difficult of trails. Trails are challenging and the terrain may be difficult. These trails are in no way meant to be used by beginning skiers. Newbies should never be on any black diamond slopes. Being on one could be hazardous for themselves and for other skiers.
Powder – New fallen snow that is still loose. This is the type that all kids hope to play with in their own backyard.
Ski lift – Just what the name implies. Board the lift at the bottom of the hill and ride to the top. These are heavier than a traditional ski lift. Up to 14 passengers can ride at one time.
Bunny slope - It is one of the important Ski terms for the beginning snow skiers and snowboarders and is not used to designate child only slopes. A bunny slope is a gentle hill that has been set aside for use by all beginning skiers, both adult and children.
Whiteout – A combination of snow, fog and wind that decimates visibility to zero. The Skiers cannot see anything during these conditions. A whiteout is more likely to occur at the highest elevations rather than lower elevations. Snow Games and Adventuere
