Top Ten Snowboarding Jumps

Snowboarding is a sport built on tricks and flair. Whilst some events focus on speed, others are all about style. On pistes all over the world, beginners, seasoned snowboarders, budding amateurs and competing professionals are all practicing their style and honing their skills – it’s what motivates them day after day!

So what are they practicing? Well there are a variety of skills that snowboarders try to master. This can be anything including straight airs, grabs, spins, flips and rotations, plants and slides. These tricks are performed on a number of obstacles such as jumps, halfpipes, handrails, ledges or just on the piste.

Jumps are some of the first tricks that snowboarders can learn. That means if you’re a beginner learning the basic moves, the next thing you should be aiming towards are some of the basic jump tricks. From here you practice more daring moves. For established snowboarders, their only limitation to a snowboarding trick is really their imagination.

So what are the top ten snowboarding jumps? Well below is a countdown, for those just getting into snowboarding to learn, leading to the top snowboarding jump of all time. As mentioned these should only really be performed when you feel competent enough as a boarder. That’s the beauty of snowboarding, there’s always a new trick to learn.

10. Ollie – One of the first jumps a snowboarder will learn. As you are riding along, this trick involves springing off via the tail of the board. Once in the air it’s all about gaining control and landing (that’s the hard bit!)

9. Shifty – An absolute classic snowboard jump. Once the snowboarder has left the ground, they wait until they are mid air. From here the rider’s body and board are rotated 90 degrees and then return to their original position upon landing.

8. Method – This is a fundamental grab trick, where a boarder attempts to grab the heel edge through their legs whilst mid air. There are a variety of different versions where the rider grabs different parts of the board with either hand.

7. Indy – A classic grab trick. Whilst the rider is midair he/she will attempt to grab the toeside of their board. They must however do this by grabbing the toeside between their feet.

6. Spaghetti Air – Much more difficult than the ‘Method’ jump, is the Spaghetti Air. This move requires much more practice and should only be attempted if you’re fully confident enough. What does it involve? Whilst in the air, the rider reaches between his/her legs and behind their front leg. From here they attempt to grab the front foot edge whilst the bag foot remains planted onto the board.

5. Japan Air – This is where the front hand goes around the outside of your front knee and grabs the toe edge on the front foot. The board is then pulled up towards the rider.

4. Back/Front Flip – Flips can sometimes be easier to perform than some of the midair grab tricks. This is because there is less to think about as it’s all about gaining speed and holding momentum, just letting your body do the work (All you have to worry about is landing). Literally as you push off, either push with your weight forwards (for a front flip) or backwards (for a back flip). Speed is key here as well as timing. It’s certainly one to master.

3. Wildcat – This is quite similar to a back flip, however as the boarder flips in more of a side cartwheel fashion. If two rotations are managed, this is called a Supercat.

2. Tamedog – Similar to the Wildcat, however the cartwheel type flip is performed in forward motion.

1.    Combo’s – Okay so it’s a bit of a copout, but the best tricks are performed in combinations.

There are so many tricks out there that it would be impossible to name them all. The best combinations involve spins, grabs and flips. Arguably the best combo is called a switch backside, double-cork 1080.
