The Myth of the Superstar
In my travels around the country as a university speaker, I have the opportunity to be around some incredible superstars. One of the most common misconceptions that I regularly hear about these superstars is that they must have some super-human ability in order to achieve what they have all on their own.
Superstars simply do not get to where they are without any help. Success does not work that way—every Karate Kid must have his or her Sensei (or maybe even a few of them).
I challenge you to think of any superstar that has achieved his or her level of success without a mentor. In fact, I would take it even a step further by saying that most superstars not only had a mentor by also had ideal learning environments for cultivating their skills. Shawn White had parents that home schooled him, allowing him to spend every waking hour on the slopes snowboarding. Beethoven’s father was his first music teacher and supported his passion for music. The list could go on forever.
However, today’s superstars that did not grow up in ideal learning environments were still able to find mentors at key periods in the development of their skills.
I find it personally fascinating how many unsuccessful people think that it is “cheating” to give themselves advantages. But, this is why those people remain unsuccessful. Every superstar needs a path to follow. There are simply not enough days in a lifetime to become a superstar by trial and error. A mentor cuts out all those years of trying to discover a path.
Just because you did not grow up in an ideal learning environment for becoming great at whatever your passion is does not mean you are left in the dark. Take a lesson from these superstars and find a mentor right away.
If you want to become great at your job, a sport, academics, or oratory, then go find someone that is great at your job, a sport, academics or oratory. Once you find that person, share with him or her passion for becoming as great as they are. You will be amazed by how willing many people are to help out others that have the determination to succeed.
By modeling this person, you give yourself the opportunity to maximize your ability. You will also find more success and enjoyment in the process than you otherwise would have. As a university speaker, I have found a number of mentors to help me over the years in different aspects of what I do and it has been invaluable.
So, go give yourself the advantage and achieve whatever it is that you’ve always wanted.
