History of Trampolines – Toys and Military Strategy
How often do you stop and think about where your toys, devices, and appliances came from? Every piece of technology that we depend on every day started out as a good idea in the brain of an inventive person. Some took years to tweak and perfect, while some were so brilliant and obvious they became popular almost overnight. Next time you’re out bouncing on your backyard trampoline, practicing your snowboarding tricks in the offseason, or working to lose some weight, it might be fun to stop and think about how this magnificently simple machine came to be so well loved.
Like so many fun and useful inventions, the idea for the trampoline came from observing people in motion. Way back in the 1930′s George Nissan was sitting in the audience of a local circus act, watching the trapeze artists swinging back and forth, and then jumping down off of their crossbars into the net that was waiting below. He noticed that when they fell, they landed in the net and bounced back up again, providing enough height to allow them to do another impressive flip or flourish in the air before jumping down to the ground.
Nissan thought that it would be simple to create a version of this stretched net that would retain its elasticity and allow gymnasts to bounce higher and higher, completing multiple tricks at a time. To create this device, Nissan created an iron frame in a square shape, and stretched a canvas mat between the edges of the frame with the aid of metal coil springs. Because the fabric was so tense because of the springs, it was possible to jump, land, and jump again with little to no effort. It didn’t take long for the trampoline to catch on in the US, and soon Nissan was making them commercially out of a factory in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
When World War II broke out, the U.S. Government was looking for a way to prepare pilots and navigators for the disorienting experience of flying an aircraft in combat. They discovered that by training soldiers to jump and twist on a trampoline, they could become more comfortable being inverted in the air and keeping their cool in disorienting circumstances. Officers that were afraid of falling soon learned to quiet their phobias after training sessions on a trampoline. Those that had trouble keeping their head while revolving in midair, leaned to balance and maintain body control during trampoline training.
