How did Snowboarding develop?
Snowboarding is a sport first developed in America during the 1960′s. It was inspired by skateboarding and involves descending a snow covered slope with a snowboard strapped to an individual’s feet. Because of it’ inherent danger and excitement, snowboarding is often times referred to as an extreme sport and is very popular with younger athletes.
The first snowboard was created by Sherman Poppen in 1965. He attached two skis together and made the board as a toy for his young daughter. He combined the word snow with surfer and called his invention the “snurfer”. During the 1970′s snowboarding grew rapidly in popularity and in 1982 the first snowboarding race was held in Vermont. The following year in 1983 the first ever snowboard world championships half-pipe competition was held in California. In 1985 the first snowboarding world cup was held in Austria. Finally, in 1998 snowboarding reached a high point of popularity and became an offical winter olympic sport.
Ski areas initially adopted the sport of snowboarding much slower than the general public. In 1985 only 7 percent of U.S. Ski areas allowed snowboarders. For many years snowboarders were thrown out of parks and banned from slopes by park official. For a time there was a very real feud between skiers and snowboarders.
As snowboarding increased in popularity the animosity between the differing athletes dissipated and now the so-called “feud” is over. Today over 97 percent of all ski areas in North America and Europe allow snowboarding. Snowboarding continues to rise in popularity among all demographics and shows absolutely no signs of slowing down.
Snowboarding has a number of different styles, each with their own individual techniques. The most popular styles in existence today are free ride, free style and free carve/race. Free ride is the most basic and easily accessible style. It simply involves boarding down a snow covered slope. It consists of boarding down any terrain that is available. In freestyle a rider uses man made boxes and rails in order to perform special tricks. These tricks include spins and rotations in the air such as 360s along with different kind of off axis spins. The final style is free-carve. Free-carve involves racing on hard packed snow and focuses on the ultimate carving turn. Free carve is practiced much less often than the other boarding styles.
Regardless of what style of snowboarding an individual decides to pursue, he or she is sure to have an exciting time. Because of the sports youthful appeal snowboarding will only grow in popularity as more people are exposed to this wonderful activity. Now get out there, buy a board, and hit the slopes!
